It's almost valentines so I thought I could throw this vintage sailor's valentine into the mix this morning. Totally fascinating. Sailor's must have had a lot of time on their hands to be making pretty shell pictures and carving whale bones. Very crafty ;-)

These are absolutely beautiful! I have been collecting shells and anything covered in shells for quite some time but have nothing like this.

We have a whole museum on this Subject here in Nantucket. The galleries sell lots of contemporary sailor's valentines that are so intricate.... Almost like lace! It's a very interesting craft as Men were the artists and all of the sweetness that went into it :) Thanks for the fab post.... As usual!
