Home
I took the opportunity the other day, when the sun was shining, to finally take some pictures of our house. As you probably have read here before we live on the edge of Kootenay Lake in BC and so our home is appropriately cottage-like. We are surrounded by mountains and trees and wildlife. We have a lot of wood and stone in the house - though these days I am busy gathering lots of ideas to start adding some more colour to the rooms. We have lived here for 5 years and have done quite a bit of work on the house. We do all the work ourselves, figuring it out as we go - there are a couple of good before and after shots right here.

The house is very open concept with large windows on 2 sides of the living/dining room that look out to through the trees to the lake. We don't have any window coverings because we don't have any neighbours. We put the teak floors in a couple of years ago and I love them.

The stone fireplace was a crazy project that we tackled and wish to never have to repeat. Lesson learned - hire someone to build a stone fireplace!

I have lots of vintage oars, paddles and skis around because its all about mountain culture here! Believe it or not those green oars did not come with that cupboard and I didn't paint them the same colour they just matched!

This kitchen was a budget makeover project (see before picture) and I think it turned out very well. Doug built the breakfast counter out of reclaimed lumber - it's perfect!

Your house is just beautiful..! I love that you guys have put a lot of work into it - it shows, and it shows how much you love the place. My husband and I have done a ton of work in our house and it certainly feels special to have all those memories of "learning as we go" - definitely warm memories in retrospect, but not so funny at the time! Hee, hee..! Loved the peek into your home - you guys have done an amazing job!

Fiona, it's simply beautiful! We did our own stone fireplace too (we covered brick with field stones) and I say never again! :-)

again, i love your house. it's so homey and inviting. just like you can walk right in and plop down with a cup of coffee.

i especially love that cabinet that's packed full of dishes etc. i'm sure it took forever for you to get it set up like that but it looks so natural, like it's just what happened over time. curious as to which is true....

Thanks for your comments everyone. I was strangely nervous to post these pictures on Cafe Cartolina this morning. Our house is so cottage-like compared to all the funky, euro chic or traditionally glamourous homes that you see on all the blogs these days. I worry that it is a bit shabby chic but oh well - it's what I like. And you guys seem to like it too!
Thanks for your comments this morning - means a lot to me, Fiona

It's so fun to see your deck, now I have a visual when you tweet about sitting in the sun, eating lunch on the deck.

Thanks for all your lovely comments - I wish you could all come to our open house next month. We have a big open house at the end of october and we open up the house and the studio for the afternoon and evening for drinks and food and socializing - and all our cards are available at wholesale for the day. It's a lot of fun - you're all welcome!
Thanks for visiting Cafe Cartolina I really appreciate it.

Wow. You have an amazing, well put together, and livable home. I can definitely see your style there. I love all the vintage elements, especially the green oars and all the skis! Beautiful views, too. I hope to again someday live somewhere where I don't have neighbors.

Oh, your house and blog are beautiful ! I noticed that tin that says playbox on it...I remember being a kid at the corner store ths-at sold these cookies . I would look at the boxes every time because the cookies looked so pretty. Then one time when my mom sent me to get something for her I used the change to buy a box. She wasn't very happy with me for spending her money and the cookies wern't very good but they sure were pretty ! Thanks for the memory
